Alexis Creek First Nations: School Background

Tsi Deldel School is located on the Redstone Reserve (Tsi Deldel) at Chilanko Forks, approximately 180 km west of Williams Lake, on Highway 20.  We are a proud recipient of a 2005-2006 School Recognition Award from UBC's School Leadership Centre, and were Certified by the First Nation School Association in May of 2005. Principal Jill Horsman is an external evaluator on FNSA teams, evaluating and certifying other schools participating in the assessment project.  We are an Independent Group 3 and are participating in the First Nation Education Authority Jurisdiction pilot project. We have partnered with Trinity Western University to begin hosting students on a short practicum, beginning in May of 2007.

Our school is small and relationship-oriented believing the core of our programs is healthy, positive relationships, strong commitments to excellence, and sharing common goals.  Our 40 + students (from preschool four year olds through grade 10) enjoy small, multi-graded classrooms, and opportunities to succeed through positive, proactive, and professional support from the teaching and support staff.  We employ a strong, research-based academic program, following prescribed curriculum of the Ministry of Education, and utilize several Direct Instruction curricula.  We rely on school-wide ability groupings for core subjects and have data supporting our academic growth over time, participating in the Foundational Skills Assessment and Canadian Test of Basics Skills on an annual basis.

Students "Rockin' with Redstone" are supported through an extensive combination of Effective and Positive Behaviour Supports.  We utilize a color-coded, tiered referral system with a remediation component to support appropriate behaviour choices.  School-wide Social Skill and Virtue programs provide explicit instruction in important character qualities.  Students benefit from 90% club, 100% club, a youth program, and a breakfast and lunch program.  We have partnered with a number of businesses, both locally and in Williams Lake, to recognize academic and behaviour excellence through prizes and free items on a monthly basis.

Our staff benefit from an extensive and progressive professional development program, which is often individualized to meet specific needs.  We are fortunate to have programming available for students and staff to have exciting and comfortable field trips on an annual basis.  Together we are working toward a vibrant school environment in which every individual is encouraged and supported to reach their full potential.  We really DO Rock….like a Redstone!
